SUNY + OCC Foreign Language Requirements

SUNY Gen Ed Foreign Language Requirement

In addition to providing a practical life skill, taking a language class is one of the 10 SUNY General Education competencies; SUNY students must complete 7 of these to receive a bachelor's degree.  All students should also inquire with prospective transfer institutions as many degrees require additional semesters of language.  Students opting to fulfill their language requirement at OCC must adhere to OCC’s placement policy. At OCC, students graduating with an A.A. in Humanities or a teacher preparation degree have a language requirement (see more information below ).

SUNY states that if a student has four years of sequential Regents level foreign language in high school or 2 years of sequential study of two foreign languages in high school, this student has already fulfilled the SUNY Gen Ed foreign language requirement. For any waivers regarding students enrolled in OCC’s Humanities Program see below.

Foreign language courses offered at OCC that meet the SUNY Gen Ed requirement for foreign language are:
  • ASL 101, 102, 201, 202 * see note below
  • CHI 101, 102
  • FRE 101, 102, 201, 202
  • GER 101, 102
  • ITA 101, 102
  • SPA 101, 102, 165, 201, 202, 204, 220

* SUNY states that ASL courses may be applied to the Gen. Ed. language requirement only when students plan to enroll in elementary and secondary education programs or those programs leading to careers in agencies where significant contact with the hearing-impaired is likely.
