Benefits of On-Campus Living

  1. More Free Time.  Living in the residence halls is much more convenient than living off campus. You are close to classes, support services, campus recreation and facilities. It eliminates travel time and transportation costs, and it provides you with more time for your studies, relaxation and socializing.
  2. Save Money.  Living on campus, you are likely to pay less and receive more services than living in an apartment.  You also avoid the annoyance of paying numerous deposits and continuing bills for electric, gas, water, heating, and phone service. Plus, you don’t have to purchase furniture or large and small appliances and you reduce your travel costs.
  3. Make New Friends.  You'll have fellow students as your roommates as well as many other students in your building to hang out with. Whether you’re hanging out in the resident lounge, participating in a study group or joining in on a resident activity, it’s easy to make friends in the residence halls.
  4. Personal Freedom.   Experiencing independence and personal freedom is an important part of your college experience.  You can learn to manage adult responsibilities, such as budgeting and time management,in a friendly, supportive environment.
  5. Communications Network.  Each residential room in our Residence Halls is wired for computer networking, cable television and telephone. Residents will have unlimited access to the internet 24 hours/day, seven days/week.
  6. Greater Academic Success.   Studies have shown that resident students have consistently achieved higher grades than their nonresident counterparts. When you live on campus, you are surrounded by others with high academic and career aspirations and you have the opportunity to participate in our unique Living Learning Communities.
  7. Leadership Opportunities.   You will have the opportunity to acquire a variety of skills as member of a college club, a student government representative, a residence life staff member, or a resident who chooses to plan a social or educational program for yourself and others to enjoy.
  8. Security.  All of our Residence Halls are located on our campus and are patrolled 24 hours/day seven day/week.  We also encourage a “neighbourhood watch” type of community involvement which offers students additional peace of mind.  SUNY has rated Onondaga as one of its “safest campuses”.
  9. Enhanced Career Opportunities.  Living on campus presents students with the opportunity to make lasting friendships that evolve into a network of future professional clients and contacts.
  10. Active Social Life.  Studies have shown that residential college students report higher satisfaction with their college experience, because it increases the quality of their social life.  It's not surprising because it's so easy to participate in campus life as well as easily accessing all services/facilities.
