Benefits

The SRC Arena will be a major benefit to not only the campus community but the entire CNY community.

Benefits to All Students

Every student will reap the benefits of a state-of-the-art wellness facility. Our growing student population of more than 12,000 includes nearly 600 students living in the College’s three modern residence halls, a large population of commuter students, non-athletes and those that participate in intramural sports. Interest in intramurals has grown exponentially in recent years and currently includes 5 on 5 basketball, ping pong, indoor soccer and flag football. The Health & Physical Education Building, built in the mid-1970’s, is currently the only facility on campus for indoor athletics and demand far outstrips capacity. The SRC Arena will allow for significant expansion in intramural and athletic offerings for all students.

Benefits to Student-Athletes

Student-athletes can take advantage of dedicated space for practice and training for our 15 intercollegiate teams, which includes men’s and women’s cross country and golf coming in fall 2010. The SRC Arena will also help Onondaga keep its competitive edge and continue its winning tradition by attracting the best student-athletes from Central New York and the region. Onondaga is home to the 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010 NJCAA National Champion Men’s Lacrosse team; the 2009 NJCAA National Champion Women’s Lacrosse team; and the 2008 NJCAA National Champion Men’s Tennis team.

Benefits to Community

The SRC Arena will be a self-sustaining facility that will be available for community use, including large sporting events and cultural activities. The facility assesses rental fees based upon the needs, and rates for non-profit organizations are available. The SRC Arena is part of Onondaga Community College’s athletic complex, which includes the David W. Murphy Field, the Health & Physical Education Building, and the planned YMCA at Onondaga Community College. The YMCA will be operated by the YMCA of Greater Syracuse and will be open to students, employees and area residents. The facility will include a state-of-the-art fitness center and aquatics facility. The YMCA of Greater Syracuse is engaged in fundraising for the planned swimming pool at the YMCA.
