For School Districts
Concurrent Enrollment
The Onondaga Concurrent Enrollment Program allows high school students to gain a head start on college prior to graduation. Students may opt to earn college credit by enrolling in select Onondaga courses that are offered by their high school, delivered at their high school site as part of their normal school day, and are taught by their high school teachers in cooperation with college mentors. Onondaga keeps official SUNY transcript records for every student. These may be requested upon successful completion of the course. Courses may be transferred to other institutions under standard transferability guidelines and practices. The program will become nationally accredited in 2006 and recognized as exemplary across the nation.
Why Concurrent Enrollment?
- Students earn college credits toward a college degree while still in high school and save money by reducing costs.
- Tuition is only 1/3 of regular tuition prices.
- Students gain confidence that they can succeed in college classes before they become full-time students on a college campus.
- High schools can offer high quality, academically challenging courses for motivated students.
- Both high schools and colleges gain an increased understanding of the goals and curriculum common to secondary and higher education.
- Partnering colleges and universities foster strong local networks among high school teachers and higher education faculty
Tech Prep
Onondaga Community College administers the Tech Prep program for Central New York. Tech Prep is a national educational reform initiative supported by federal legislation, which strives to prepare high school and college students for the high-tech careers of today. The program begins in high school and concludes with at least and Associate degree or Certificate. It uses the model of career clusters or majors for students that have chosen this pathway. The CNY Tech Prep Consortium is comprised of area school districts, colleges and businesses that are committed to this initiative.
Tech Prep is an educational program that recognizes the unique learning and motivational needs of students, the changing skill needs of employers, and the need to integrate career and academic knowledge.
Tech Prep requires participation by high schools, community colleges, and business/industry in the planning and implementation of a 4+2 Program. The Tech Prep program is rigorous and prepares students for post-secondary education or work experience. Tech Prep creates a smooth transition from school to work that begins in the 9th grade and continues through the first two years of college.
The school-based curriculum includes college credit bearing courses offered in grades 11 & 12.
The work-based curriculum includes job shadowing, apprenticeships, and other experiential learning experiences. These activities forge a seamless link between classroom learning, post-secondary education, and work experience.
