President Debbie L. Sydow, Ph.D., named President of the College of William and Mary’s Richard Bland College
The College of William and Mary’s Board of Visitors announced today that Debbie L. Sydow, Ph.D., President of Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, has been named the President of Richard Bland College in Virginia. Richard Bland College is the only public junior college of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the only branch campus of the College of William and Mary, the second-oldest college in the United States.
Dr. Sydow has served as President of Onondaga Community College since 2000. Under her leadership, the College has achieved remarkable accomplishments, including record-breaking enrollment growth, transformative capital investment, and a track record of responsiveness to the needs of the Central New York community.
“Having faithfully served as Onondaga's president for 12 years, and at a time when the College is very well positioned for continued success, the time is right for a change. I am honored to assume the presidency of William and Mary's two-year branch campus, Richard Bland College, in Petersburg, Virginia. The opportunity to assist RBC in establishing and navigating its roadmap for future success has tremendous appeal. And, of course, Harry and I also look forward to spending more time with our family, especially our grandchildren, in Virginia,” said Dr. Sydow, a native Virginian who joined Onondaga from the acclaimed Virginia Community College system.
"For more than a decade, Debbie Sydow has guided Onondaga Community College through a tremendous period of growth and transformation. When she arrived, Onondaga was experiencing stagnating enrollment and limited public and private investment. She has reinvigorated the campus into a proud community of nearly 13,000 learners, and Central New York’s leaders and citizens share this immense pride in our “community’s college.” Fortunately, Dr. Sydow has also built an exceptional senior management team with the strength, talent and experience to continue to drive Onondaga’s mission and strategic goals forward,” said Margaret “Meg” O’Connell, Chair of the Onondaga Community College’s Board of Trustees.
Dr. Sydow will assume the presidency at Richard Bland College on July 1, 2012. Dr. Sydow and Chair O’Connell will take all necessary steps to ensure a smooth and seamless transition in leadership. This transition will include an interim president to allow a national search for Onondaga Community College’s next permanent president to proceed over the course of the coming year.
