Gallery Exhibit: Phillia Yi
Gallery at the Ann Felton Multicultural Center
August 28 - October 1, 2008
Originally from Korea, Phillia’s work is inspired from the struggle one feels when raised in one country, and residing in another. This disconnect with her birth country was made more evident by the arrival of her son. As quoted from the artists catalogue: “…this made her aware of her own morality and her inability to connect him to her native culture.”
Traveling to Korea through a Fullbright Fellowship enabled Phillia to reconnect with her ancestral culture and regain her Korean identity. Phillia's large scale, wood block prints meld the East and the West in abstract and expressionistic compositions, suggesting the forces of nature.
