In a new partnership with Barnes and Noble, OCC is helping reduce the cost of textbooks by nearly 50% with the Box of Books program.
Students attending OCC this fall will be able to pick up all the textbooks and supporting materials they need in one convenient package, at a reduced price. They will also be able to pick up a Chromebook at the same time for $250 if they want. If you’re eligible for financial aid you can use it towards the purchase the textbooks and Chromebook or you can apply for a scholarship to help cover the costs.
No special process to be a part of the program, just apply for admission if you haven’t already and when you register for classes you're in!
OCC wants to make it easier and more affordable for you to get all of your textbooks and a computer in one convenient place. We are proud to introduce the Box of Books program at the Bookstore to get you ready for class this fall.
Here’s what you need to know
- Apply to OCC and register for classes & keep an eye out for an email letting you know it’s time to order your textbooks.
- Place your order for your Box of Books with the Bookstore online by August 23rd.
- You will need a credit or debit card to secure your order. No payment will be necessary at the time of securing your box of books! Textbook costs are included in your student account.
- You’ll head to the first day of class with the books you need to succeed this semester and with a lot more money in your pocket!
Need a new computer too?
Students at Onondaga Community College will receive a Dell Inspiron Chromebook 11 as part of the Box of Books project. This product is a streamlined, Chrome-browser-only laptop computer with an Intel Celeron N3060 processor and 4GB of memory. The Chromebook is designed to work with web-based, cloud-hosted services and will support students’ access to course materials in Blackboard, updates and alerts in Lazer Success, and documents and materials in Office 365. Students may use Office 365 and/or Google documents and will have ample capacity for both storage and sharing.

Q: What is Box of Books?
A: The Box of Books project is a response to the increasing number of students who lack required textbooks/codes. A personalized Box of Books containing the required textbooks/codes adopted by their faculty will be made available to each enrolled student prior to the first day of classes. In addition, new students will be provided with a hot spot-enabled Chromebook at the time they pick up their Box of Books.
Q: Will the Box of Books project be more expensive for me?
A: No. This approach allows the College’s Bookstore partner, Barnes & Noble College, to purchase materials for all courses in bulk, thereby significantly reducing prices to students. Through the Box of Books project, students will be billed $21.50 per course credit ($64.50 per 3-credit course, $86 per 4-credit course) via their student account for required textbooks/codes. Currently, students pay nearly $82 per textbook in the OCC Bookstore, and many courses require more than one textbook.
In addition, new students will be charged $250 for the Chromebook. The combined price of the Chromebook and textbooks/codes will be supported by student financial aid for most students.
Q: What happens to Open Educational Resources (OER) courses that presently do not charge for course materials?
A: OER courses are exempt from the $21.50 per course credit fee. All other credits in which a student is enrolled will carry the $21.50 fee, regardless of whether a textbook is required. Students who do not benefit financially from this arrangement have the right to opt out of the program and purchase their textbooks individually.
Q: What happens if I already have a computer?
A: You can opt out of the Chromebook purchase.
Q: What if I drop a class?
A: You may return the book to the Bookstore on the same terms and timelines currently in place. If you drop a class and enroll in a different class, the bookstore will “swap” the required textbooks/codes so that you have what you need.
Q: What if I enroll immediately before (or after!) classes begin?
A: Barnes & Noble has a supply chain and fulfillment plan in place that should allow you to receive your books within 48 hours of registration.
Q: Can I keep the books and Chromebook once my course is over?
A: Book orders will be fulfilled in the discretion of the Bookstore with a combination of new, used, rental, and digital products based on each student’s individual course selection. Rental products must be returned at the end of the semester consistent with current policies and procedures and will be recirculated in future years that the same materials are used. This means that in general you will need to place a credit card or debit card on file with the Bookstore prior to book pick up. The credit/debit card will not be charged unless the you fail to return the rental materials at the end of the semester. Students who cannot provide a credit or debit card will be assisted on a case-by-case basis.
Chromebooks become the property of each student and do not need to be returned.
