About Accreditation

The Middle States reaccreditation process involves the completion of an institutional Self-Study and a visit by a team of external peer evaluators.  Throughout the process, OCC demonstrates that it  meets the expectations of the Commission’s Requirements of Affiliation, Standards for Accreditation, and relevant federal regulations.  The College evaluates the extent to which it is accomplishing its mission and related goals and making improvements when deemed appropriate by key campus constituents.

OCC has decided to use the comprehensive self-study review model to advance institutional self-understanding and self-improvement. The intended outcomes of the self-study process are:

  1. Demonstrate how Onondaga Community College meets Middle States Accreditation Standards and Requirements of Affiliation.
  2. Capitalize on overlapping efforts of strategic planning, implementation of Achieving the Dream priorities, and the Middle States Self-Study to inform subsequent operational planning and decision-making.
  3. Assess the quality and effectiveness of academic programs and administrative services in relation to the expectations of transfer institutions and the changing needs of students in the Central New York community.

Phase one included a Self-Study Design and Documentation Roadmap.  These documents were reviewed and discussed by our Middle States liaison, Dr. Ellie Fogarty, on May 5, 2016. Phase two included Self-Study Report preparation and campus review – over 300 faculty and staff members participated in OCC’s 8th annual Planning and Assessment Day, “The Ultimate Assessment: Draft Self-Study Review”, on May 16, 2017.  Phase three includes Self-Study Report completion and preparation for evaluation team visits. Our preliminary visit with Dr. Bette Simmons, Evaluation Team Chair, occurred on October 23, 2017. Evaluation team visit dates are April 22-25, 2018.
