Just for You
Art surrounds us every minute of every day. Onondaga's Associate's degree in Art focuses your creative talents and develops your potential to become an imaginative thinker and effective visual communicator whether you are interested in creating a painting, an interactive CD, a ceramic teapot or a corporate identity. Ultimately, you will learn to think creatively, communicate visually and take your artistic talents to the next level. Each year Onondaga students do just that, capturing awards in the annual SUNY Student Art Exhibition.
During your first two semesters, you will focus on studio art foundation courses in drawing, design, art history, color theory and concept development to help enhance your creative talents and develop your ability to become an imaginative thinker. Your choice of specializations include: Drawing and Painting, Fine Crafts, Graphic Design or Multimedia Design. Areas of Specialization >
All courses are taught by experienced, practicing artists who are passionate about what they do and teach. This program focuses on honing your conceptual and technical skills. Along with the foundation courses and specific areas of study, students are actively encouraged to immerse themselves in art through student art shows, exhibitions at the college art gallery and by attending presentations from visiting artists. Art Club and class activities include field trips to museums and art and design studios to broaden the understanding of the arts and to stimulate the creative process. Student Activities >
Completion of this degree program opens a multitude of exciting paths to follow. Some graduates choose to immediately apply their talents in the workplace; however, the majority of students transfer to four-year colleges or universities. Our art students are frequently accepted to some of the country's most prestigious art schools. A sampling of career possibilities includes: fine artist, graphic designer, ceramic artist and multimedia designer. Career Paths >
It is important that students who plan to transfer after
completing their studies at Onondaga consult from the beginning of their academic
program with an OCC advisor and a contact at the transfer college to make sure
both OCC's degree requirements and transfer requirements are being meet. You
can view current information on transfer
agreements on our Transfer Services page.
"I guess I've always wanted to be an artist. I just wasn't sure if I really had the talent. But then I won Best of Show in the SUNY Student Art Exhibition. That gave me the extra confidence I needed to keep going." ~Melanie F.
