Just for You
Of Interest: Get experience through "bunk-in" status.
Few careers are as demanding or take you as close to the danger. Few require the same degree of intensive training and hands-on knowledge of how to effectively operate state-of-the-art fire fighting equipment. But fewer still offer the satisfaction of saving what's priceless - human life. The duties and responsibilities of the modern firefighter require a continual upgrading of skills and an acute awareness of new developments and trends. Our degree program was originally developed at the request of the Syracuse Fire Department and is offered through one of the most progressive programs in the state.
You will learn about all areas of fire prevention and you will develop the critical fire skills necessary to handle the challenges and demands of the fire protection profession. The program emphasizes effective fire awareness, tactics and operations, qualities in fire administration, command and managerial positions and the development of advanced skills to allow you to assume a contributing role in the delivery of fire protection services. You will learn about fire fighting tactics and strategies, including: hazardous materials and their control; fire hydraulics; and safety management. Coursework in science, math and English round out your degree.
This is a demanding program which fosters a close-knit community among students. A "bunk in" housing program has been established for students who live outside of Onondaga County and who are enrolled in this program. In exchange for free housing at one of the participating volunteer fire stations, students provide staffing for emergency responses and perform light maintenance work for the host department.
A combination of this A.A.S. degree in Fire Protection Technology along with national certification makes you an excellent candidate for careers in municipal services, EMS, administration, prevention and operation, industrial fire safety, code enforcement and more. This is the only program in New York State offering national firefighter certification which can lead to successful careers in firefighting throughout the country. Career Paths >
It is important that students who plan to transfer after completing their studies at Onondaga consult from the beginning of their academic program with an OCC advisor and a contact at the transfer college to make sure both OCC's degree requirements and transfer requirements are being meet.
