Just for You
OF INTEREST: Get your General Studies A.A. degree - online!
You know you want to attend college, but you just aren't certain where you'd like to focus your studies. No problem. With General Studies, you can take your time to think about it. At the same time, you can feel good about gaining the knowledge and support you need to figure it out. The A.A. degree in General Studies will provide a broad background of study that most four-year institutions require.
You will learn how to better understand your career options while improving your academic skills. By exploring your interest, you will discover the potential that lies inside of you. This degree program will help you leverage the information and tools you need to get to the next level. Most importantly, you will develop critical thinking skills that serve as a solid foundation for further studies or immediate employment.
The program may be taken on campus or online. Since the General Studies classes are small with no more than 20 students, you will get the individual guidance you need. Courses are taught seminar style, with an emphasis on assessments, surveys and class discussions to help discover where your interests lie. You will also get a background in history, science, English and social sciences as most freshmen and sophomores do at four-year colleges. Many students choose to transfer to a four-year institution and pursue concentrations such as cinema, communication, human services or journalism.
There is no "typical" General Studies student or career path. Some graduates find jobs in public service or government agencies. Others choose to transfer to a four-year institution to continue their studies. Regardless of the goals you decide to pursue, the broad background provided through General Studies offers the rewards and opportunities of a diversified education.
It is important that students who plan to transfer after completing their studies at Onondaga consult from the beginning of their academic program with an OCC advisor and a contact at the transfer college to make sure both OCC's degree requirements and transfer requirements are being meet. You can view current information on transfer agreements on our Transfer Services page.
"My professors have really helped me make the transition from high school to college. When I got here, I had no idea what I wanted to do. Now I'm 95% sure I want to study filmmaking after graduation." ~ Sam G., 2nd Year Student, General Studies.
