Every time a patient receives treatment, a record is created. Each one is essential for quality patient care and the financial health of hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and doctor's offices. Today, Health Information Technology (HIT) is one of the fastest growing careers in the country. This accredited program gives you the education and credentials sought after by employers.
You will learn to use the most current information systems for collecting, analyzing, disseminating and maintaining health care and patient data. You will learn to understand medical information through coursework in anatomy and physiology as well as medical terminology. Three required practicums help you put theory into practice.
The program offers a rigorous combination of information systems, biology and liberal arts. The curriculum adheres to the standards set by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
Upon graduation, you will be qualified to take the national credentialing examination offered by AHIMA, and become a registered health information technician (RHIT). Some students choose to transfer to a related four-year program. As a graduate of this program, you will be eligible for technical and management positions in all phases of health care. It is important that students who plan to transfer after completing their studies at Onondaga consult from the beginning of their academic program with an OCC advisor and a contact at the transfer college to make sure both OCC's degree requirements and transfer requirements are being meet. You can view current information on transfer agreements on our Transfer Services page.
"I've always been a detail person and had an interest in the medical field. Thanks to Onondaga's HIT program, I found the perfect way to use these abilities and interests in a career that helps people." ~Matt G.
