    What It Is Like:

Onondaga offers a unique program that allows students to learn the theory portion of the program independently outside of traditional classroom settings through self-paced modules with supportive guidance from faculty. Students design their own structure for gathering and learning information and for mastering new skills, thus preparing them to act confidently and independently in the workforce when they graduate. You will learn and practice your skills in the classroom and through clinical experience in hospitals and community agencies. Since most of our students are non-traditional students, the program offers flexible pacing to accommodate family, work and community commitments. The program also offers an advanced standing option for licensed practical nurses and students transferring nursing courses from other programs.  Successful students are those who can work independent from a structured classroom environment.

    Where It Can Take You:

With the current nursing shortage, there is a high demand for nurses. Our nursing graduates are employed in all aspects of health care including school nursing, clinics, hospitals, long-term care facilities and home care. Many graduates hold supervisory and administrative positions, and, with further education, there are many  opportunities for expanded roles.

It is important that students who plan to transfer after completing their studies at Onondaga consult from the beginning of their academic program with an OCC advisor and a contact at the transfer college to make sure both OCC's degree requirements and transfer requirements are being meet. You can view current information on transfer agreements on our Transfer Services page.

Criminal background checks may be required by the clinical agency at the expense of the student.

"I chose nursing because I wanted a better understanding of some health issues in my family. Onondaga's program provided the flexibility I needed to learn and still be available to help my family with these issues." ~Shanda
