Food is essential to life. To you - even more so. It not only nourishes your body, but also your spirit. You have a passion for food. You don't just cook because you have to - you do it because you love to. Professional Cooking is an art form within the hospitality industry. It is a growing field that is challenging, satisfying and endlessly creative. No wonder you are interested in a career as a professional cook. This one-year certificate program is an excellent first step in beginning a fulfilling and dynamic career in the food service / hospitality industry.

What You Will Learn:

You will learn the basics of nutrition as it relates to food and menu planning. You will learn how to purchase, store and professionally prepare food in an environment that is both efficient and sanitary. Finally, you will learn supervisory skills and management techniques to handle budgets, menus and staff as deftly as you handle whisks and knives. A wide variety of advanced culinary arts courses are also offered to enhance the management courses.

What It Is Like:

Classes are small and instructors are easily accessible. By working in our two cooking laboratories, you will get the hands-on experience that is critical in mastering professional cooking techniques. You will also be expected to spend 400 hours working at an approved work experience within the hospitality industry. There is also an optional trip to the International Hotel / Motel and Restaurant Trade Show in New York City and a tour of the hospitality industry in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Additional expenses are incurred for these two optional trips. Please consult with your academic advisor for more information).

Where It Can Take You:

Upon successful completion of this one-year certificate program, you will be qualified for entry-level positions such as: assistant chef, commercial cook and a variety of positions in commercial kitchens. Many students choose to continue their studies at top culinary schools throughout the country.
