There are a number of testing and placement requirements to be completed prior to acceptance into Onondaga Community College’s Nursing Program. Applicants must complete testing/placement prerequisites in the order listed below. All testing is completed on a walk-in basis during posted hours. Appointments, pre-registration, etc. are NOT required unless you receive disability accommodations for testing. If this is the case, Testing Services will contact the student directly to set up an appointment (see accommodative testing tab to the left for more details).
Transfer students who have completed college level courses in these areas will be exempt from testing after transcripts have been evaluated. These students will receive an email specifying which placement tests they are exempt from. Note that college level math completion must be within 2 years of matriculation (acceptance) into the Nursing Program. If 2 + years have elapsed, students must complete the math placement test and place into college level math. This 2 year stipulation does not apply to English and reading placement.
Students who are not transferring courses in these areas must take the placement test and place into college level English, reading and math. The tests are multiple choice, un-timed and on the computer. Calculator use is permitted. Each test is 20 questions long with the exception of Computation Skills (arithmetic) which has 15 questions. Students receive results upon completion. If necessary, re-test options will be discussed with the student after testing.
Successful completion of beginning algebra (MAT 088/087), ENG 099 and RDG 093 will also fulfill these placement requirements.
The Nursing Math Test is broken up into three, 10 question sections. To pass, a student can get no more than 2 questions wrong per section. Failure to meet this minimum requirement will require re-testing.
Remediation in the Math Diagnostics Center (Mawhinney Hall rm 208) is required prior to re-testing. Math Diagnostics will administer the re-test.
Like math placement, this test must be passed within 2 years of matriculation into the Nursing Program.
This test is paper=pencil, is not timed, and calculator use is prohibited. Students receive results upon completion.
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a scholastic aptitude assessment that is used as one component of the selection process for admitting students into the Nursing program at Onondaga Community College. The passing score for this test is 70%. The TEAS is an online, timed assessment that takes a maximum of 3 hours and 50 minutes to complete. On average, the TEAS takes about 3 hours to complete. The use of calculators is prohibited. Students will receive their score directly upon test completion.
There are four sections and the 170 multiple choice questions cover the following skill areas:
TEAS is offered during scheduled Testing Lab hours. Students must begin testing within the first two hours of the lab opening. The TEAS is available only on OCC’s main campus. Students must start TEAS by 2pm on days when walk-in is open until 6pm and by 11 on days when walk-in is open until 2pm. Please note that there will be a high volume of students testing as the nursing application deadline approaches each spring (November 1st) and fall (March 1st) semester. It is in your best interests to test as far in advance of the application deadline as possible. You will experience long waits and may not be able to test on the day or at the time you would prefer if you wait until the last minute to take the TEAS. Students will not be allowed to star before or after the times indicated for TEAS regardless of wait time or proximity to the application deadline.
Students may create a username and password on the ATI website prior to test day or students can complete this step when they come to Onondaga to take the test:
PAYMENT- The fee for taking the TEAS is $45+tax to be paid online directly to ATI on the day of the exam. All payments must be made with credit or debit card ON TEST DAY. Payment is made directly to ATI on the web just before the student is routed into the test. A proctor will guide the student through this process. Do NOT attempt to pay prior to the day you decide to test. Check, cash, money order, etc. are not acceptable forms of payment.
Please note: If you are taking the Test of essential Academic Skills for a school other than Onondaga, you must pay an additional $26 exam proctoring fee. This non-refundable exam fee is only required for students who are not applying into the Nursing program at Onondaga. The fee must be paid prior to testing. If you are unsure whether or not you need to pay the exam fee, check with a proctor in Testing Services before paying it. All transactions for proctoring fees are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another date or exam.
Nursing Theory tests and ATI proctored tests are offered during walk-in hours listed on the testing schedule. Please note, that it is not recommended that any student complete the ATI Comprehensive exam on a Saturday due to the length of this exam.
Photo ID is required
Since these are high stakes exams, you will not be allowed to bring any items with you into the exam room (phone, notebook, hats, jacket etc). While there is space for holding onto such items in proctors’ offices, the Testing Services Office is not responsible for lost or stolen items. It is recommended that you keep valuables in your lockers in the nursing department.
When you arrive for testing, it is critical that you pull a ticket for Testing Services prior to having a seat in our waiting area. You can get a ticket from the self-serve kiosk next to the Information desk in the lobby of Gordon. Nursing students can pull a ticket directly from that kiosk without having to wait in line to speak with the representative at the Information desk. After you have your ticket, head to our waiting room.
