Onondaga Community College rallies for victory over Columbia-Greene CC

Lazers to open Mid-State play at Finger Lakes on Thursday.

SYRACUSE, NY. – January 8, 2008 – The Onondaga Community College men’s basketball team defeated Columbia-Greene Community College, 73-66, on the road yesterday (Monday). The contest was a rematch of the championship game of December’s Onondaga Community College Classic, which was also won by the Lazers. Onondaga’s record now stands at 10-3 on the season.

After jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead, the Lazers went ice cold from the floor, shooting only 26% from the floor in the first half and allowing the host Twins to take a 32-28 lead to the locker room at halftime. Columbia-Green maintained the lead throughout the second half, and held a 62-58 advantage with only 2:17 remaining in the contest. At that point, Onondaga was able to close the game on a 15-4 run, keyed by back to back steals for layups by Chris Vincent (Baldwinsville C.W. Baker) and 7 points from Zack Thomsen (New Berlin Unadilla Valley). Vincent led the Lazers in scoring with 20 points and Kevin Barrett (Syracuse Bishop Ludden) added 14 points. Barrett pulled down a team best 10 rebounds, while Vincent handed out 5 assists. The Lazers were able to overcome their poor shooting night (36% for the game) largely because they owned a 47-38 rebounding advantage and committed a season low 6 turnovers.

Onondaga opens Mid-State Athletic Conference play on Thursday at Finger Lakes Community College with an 8:00 pm tip-off. Onondaga will meet Cayuga Community College in its Mid-State home opener on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
