SYRACUSE, NY. – January 29, 2008 – Onondaga Community College men’s basketball player Zack Thomsen (New Berlin Unadilla Valley), a 6’2” point guard, has been named the Mid-State Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week for the week ending January 27, 2008. Thomsen shares the honor with Rob Krowiak of Broome Community College. This is the second consecutive week that an Onondaga player has been recognized, as Lazer forward Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) was the recipient the previous week.
Thomsen received the recognition on the strength of his performance in leading Onondaga to road wins at Jefferson Community College and Tompkins Cortland Community College last week. In a 77-64 win at Jefferson he had 22 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds, made 5 three-point field goals, and only committed 1 turnover in 34 minutes. In a 79-52 win at Tompkins Cortland he had 21 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds, made 4 three-point goals, and again only turned the ball over once. For the week he averaged 21.5 points and 4.5 assists and made 15 of 30 shots (50%) from the floor, including 9 of 20 (45%) from behind the 3-point arc. Thomsen has led Onondaga in scoring in 5 of its 6 conference games so far. He is averaging 17.0 points and 4.2 assists in conference play, and 12.0 points and 4.9 assists overall on the season. He is being recruited by several NCAA Division II schools.
Onondaga now has an overall record of 15-5 and a Mid-State Conference mark of 5-1. The Lazers are tied with Finger Lakes Community College for the lead in the conference, and play the Lakers in their next contest, tomorrow (Wednesday) at home at 8:00 pm.
