Onondaga Community College men’s basketball player Shane Williams named Academic All-American

Williams one of five Onondaga athletes to receive distinction

SYRACUSE, NY. – June 24, 2008 – The National Junior College Athletic Association has named Onondaga Community College men’s basketball player Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) an Academic All-American for the 2007-08 academic year. Williams a business administration major with a 3.62 grade point average, accepted a scholarship offer in April to continue his education and basketball career at Lindenwood University, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics school located in St. Charles, Missouri.

This past season, Williams led the Lazers in both scoring and rebounding, as he averaged 16.0 points and 11.2 rebounds per contest. In the process, he set both single season and career rebounding records for Onondaga, as he collected 336 rebounds on the season, bringing his career total to 638. He also established a new career record for blocked shots with 88. Williams was named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference All-Conference Team, was named 2nd Team NJCAA Region III All-Region, and was named to the Basketball Coaches Association of New York All-New York State Junior College 2nd Team. He was also the NJCAA Division III national Co-Player of the Week for the week ending December 9, the Mid-State Athletic Conference Player of the Week and the Region III Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 20, the Most Valuable Player of the Onondaga Community College Classic, and a recipient of the BCANY Scholar Athlete Award.

Williams was the only men’s basketball player in all of Region III to earn Academic All-American honors. He was also one of five Onondaga athletes to receive the distinction, joining softball player Megan Blauvelt (Port Byron), tennis player Ashley Leclair (East Syracuse-Minoa), baseball player Eric Detota (Syracuse Westhill), and women’s basketball player Amy Twentyman (Tully).
