Onondaga Community College opens Mid-State Athletic Conference play with win at Cayuga CC

Lazers also announce several schedule changes

SYRACUSE, NY. – January 11, 2009 – The Onondaga Community College men’s basketball team opened Mid-State Athletic Conference play on the road at Cayuga Community College on Saturday and came away with an 88-57 victory over the Spartans. The win was the Lazers’ 3rd in a row, and 6th straight over Cayuga, and raised Onondaga’s overall record to 7-7.

Cayuga jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the game’s opening minutes, but Onondaga responded with an 11-0 run over 6 minutes to take control of the game. The Lazers led, 33-25, at the half and scored the first 9 points of the second half to push the advantage to 17. From there, Onondaga pulled away and extended the lead to as much as 35, before ending with the final margin. Jason Kondra (East Syracuse-Minoa) scored all of his game high 26 points in the second half to pace the Lazers. Matt Potter (New Berlin Unadilla Valley) posted a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Brandon Haughton (Cicero-North Syracuse) added 10 points. Kondra handed out 5 assists and Eric Ball (Syracuse Bishop Grimes) recorded 4 steals. The Lazers made 31 of 72 shots from the floor (43%), while limiting Cayuga to 23 of 76 (30%) shooting. Onondaga also converted on 23 of 39 free throw attempts, compared to 10 of 17 for the Spartans. Onondaga was also able to overcome a 55-48 rebounding advantage for Cayuga by forcing 23 Spartan turnovers while only turning the ball over 14 times themselves.

Onondaga returns to action on Thursday night, as they host Corning Community College in a Mid-State Athletic Conference contest. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.

Onondaga has also announced several schedule changes. The Lazers’ home contest scheduled for Monday, January 12, against Fulton Montgomery Community College has been postponed until Monday, January 19, with a tentative start time of 3:00 pm. Also, the home contest with Finger Lakes Community College, postponed last Thursday due to inclement weather, will now be played at 8:00 pm on Thursday, February 12. Finally, Onondaga’s home contest against Broome Community College, originally scheduled for Wednesday, February 11, will now be played at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, February 10.
