Onondaga CC’s Matt Potter named Mid-State Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Week

Lazers defeat Fulton-Montgomery in non-conference tilt

SYRACUSE, NY. – January 21, 2009 – Onondaga Community College men’s basketball player Matt Potter (New Berlin Unadilla Valley) has been named the Mid-State Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Week for the week ending January 18. He shares the recognition with Kadeem Nicholas of Jefferson Community College. Potter received the recognition by averaging 22 points, 17 rebounds, and 4.5 blocked shots in Onondaga’s two MSAC games last week. In a 108-101 overtime win over Broome Community College on Saturday, Potter scored a career high 29 points, tied the Onondaga single game record of 21 rebounds, and blocked 5 shots. On the season he is averaging 15.5 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.3 blocked shots per game. His total of 56 blocked shots on the season equals the Onondaga single season record.

On Monday, Onondaga picked up a 95-86 non-conference victory over Fulton-Montgomery Community College. The Lazers trailed by 1 at the half but overtook the Raiders midway through the second half and pulled away for the win. Jason Kondra (East Syracuse-Minoa) scored all of his team high 18 points in the second half to lead the Lazers. Onondaga placed 6 players in double figures for the second consecutive game, as Jordan Barzee (Syracuse Christian Home School) and Josh Michlovitch (Liverpool) scored 15 and 14 points respectively. Zach Chawgo (LaFayette) added 11 points, while Potter and Eric Ball (Syracuse Bishop Grimes) scored 10 apiece. Ball led Onondaga with 13 rebounds and Kondra handed out a team high 9 assists. The Lazers made 35 of 78 shots from the floor (44.9%) and 19 of 24 at the line (79.2%). Onondaga outrebounded Fulton-Montgomery, 48-39.

Onondaga now has an overall record of 9-8. The win over Fulton-Montgomery was their 5th in their last 6 games. The Lazers next play tonight (Wednesday) at 8:00 pm, as they host Jefferson in a Mid-State Athletic Conference tilt.
