SYRACUSE, NY. – February 23, 2009 – Onondaga Community College men’s basketball player Matt Potter (New Berlin Unadilla Valley) was named National Junior College Athletic Association Region III Male Co-Athlete of the Week for the Week ending February 22. Potter, a 6’6” forward and team captain, shares the recognition with basketball player Dennis Oglesby of Jefferson Community College. The honor was the 3rd major recognition that Potter has received in the past 4 days. Last Friday, he was named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference All-Conference Team, and on Saturday he was named to the NJCAA Region III All-Region 3rd Team.
Potter received the recognition on the strength of a 22 point, 21 rebound effort in leading Onondaga over Tompkins Cortland Community College last Tuesday. His 21 rebounds tied an Onondaga school record that was originally set by Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee / Lindenwood University) on February 7, 2007 against Tompkins Cortland, and equaled by Potter on January 17 of this year against Broome Community College. He also blocked 2 shots, recorded 4 steals, and converted on 16 of 21 free throw attempts. For the week, he shot 57.1% from the floor, 74.1% from the foul line, and averaged 14.0 points, 15.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.5 steals, and 2.0 blocks. On the season, Potter is averaging 14.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.6 blocked shots per game, and is shooting 56.4% from the floor. He has already established a new Onondaga single season record for blocked shots with 75 to this point. He was the MSAC Co-Player of the Week for the week ending January 18.
Onondaga plays Hudson Valley Community College, the #3 team in the nation in the latest NJCAA Division III national poll, Friday afternoon at 1:00 pm at Jefferson Community College in the quarter-final round of the NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament.
