Onondaga Community College captures third straight MSAC win by defeating Jefferson CC

Lazers to play conference leaders on Tuesday with playoff berth on the line

SYRACUSE, NY. February 13, 2010 The Onondaga Community College mens basketball team picked up a crucial Mid-State Athletic Conference victory this afternoon, coming away with a 59-52 home win over Jefferson Community College. The win was Onondagas 3rd in a row, and moves the Lazers into a three-way tie for 3rd in the conference standings with Cayuga Community College and Finger Lakes Community College. The top four teams in the final regular season standings will compete for the conference championship on February 20 and 21 at Tompkins Cortland Community College. Tompkins Cortland has clinched the top seed in the tournament, and Broome Community College has clinched the #2 seed. If Onondaga can defeat Tompkins Cortland in their regular season finale on Tuesday evening, the Lazers will clinch a spot in the conference tournament, along with the winner of Tuesdays Finger Lakes-Cayuga matchup.

Todays contest against Jefferson was tightly contested throughout, featuring 20 lead changes and 6 ties. The Lazers held a 28-27 advantage at halftime, and neither team could open up an advantage of more than 4 points in the second half. With Jefferson leading, 50-49. Andrew Lucio (Solvay) connected on a three point goal with 2:26 to go to trigger an 8-2 closing run that secured the win for Onondaga. Brad Romancik (LaFayette) was Onondagas only double figure scorer, recording a game high 18 points. Zach Chawgo (LaFayette) added 9 points on 9 of 10 free throw shooting and pulled down a team best 13 rebounds. Lucio and Chawgo each handed out 5 assists. Onondaga again overcame a cold shooting performance (19 of 56, 33.9%) by producing a strong defensive effort that limited Jefferson to 20 of 57 shooting (35.1%) and outrebounded the Cannoneers, 47-33.

Onondaga will host Tompkins Cortland Community College on Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm in the regular season finale. The contest will mark the final regular season appearance for six second year players: Chawgo and Romancik, along with Dave Foltz (Auburn), Nate Foote (Norwich), Josh Kennedy (Chittenango), and Dan Mabbett (Mohawk Jarvis).
