SYRACUSE, NY. – January 5, 2011 – The Onondaga Community College men’s basketball team returned from a 22-day holiday layoff yesterday afternoon and came away with a 97-81 home non-conference victory over Columbia-Greene Community College. The win was Onondaga’s 6th straight over the Twins and raised the Lazers’ record to 9-4 on the season. It was also Onondaga’s 8th win in their last 10 contests.
Onondaga jumped out to a 15-3 lead 7 minutes into yesterday’s game, and Columbia-Green never got closer than 8 points the rest of the game. The Onondaga lead stood at 14, 45-31, at halftime and grew to as much as 23 in the second half. Brandon Seibt (Central Square P.V. Moore) paced the Lazers with a career best 25 points on 9 of 13 shooting, including 5 of 8 from behind the three-point arc. Jesse Gates (Liverpool) and Heath Stone (Chittenango) both recorded double doubles, with Gates scoring 22 points and collecting 12 rebounds and Stone adding 16 points and 17 rebounds. Tom Graf (Jordan-Elbridge) also reached double figures with a career best 13 points while Andrew Lucio (Solvay) handed out a team high 8 assists. Onondaga shot 47.1% from the floor, including 38.7% from behind the three-point line, while Columbia-Greene connected on 39.2% of their shots, including 47.4 from behind the arc. The Twins made 10 of 19 free throws, while the Lazers made 3 of 6. Onondaga held a commanding 60-39 rebounding advantage.
Onondaga returns to action on Thursday evening as they host Finger Lakes Community College in the Mid-State Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Finger Lakes will come into the game with a 10-1 overall record and is currently ranked #5 in the nation in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm.
