SYRACUSE, NY. – January 12, 2011 – The Onondaga Community College men’s basketball team raised their overall record to 11-5 on the season with a 99-90 home non-conference win over Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Monday evening. The 11 wins recorded by the Lazers so far exceed their total of 10 wins for the 2009-2010 season.
With Onondaga holding a 24-23 lead with 8:00 remaining in the first half, the Lazers went on a 21-7 run to go up 15 late in the first half. Fulton-Montgomery closed the gap to 10 at halftime, and got within 3 late in the game, but the Raiders were never able to overtake the Lazers. Onondaga’s superior depth proved to be a difference in the game, as 11 Lazers played in the game, compared to only 7 Raiders. The Lazers held a 37-3 advantage in bench scoring and a 64-44 rebounding advantage, allowing them to overcome a cold shooting night which saw them only hit 39.1% of their shots from the floor, while Fulton-Montgomery connected on 44.2% of their shots.
Jesse Gates (Liverpool) paced a balanced Onondaga attack with 26 points, and he added 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Brandon Seibt (Central Square P.V. Moore) added 16 points, while Jordan Prior (Cortland), Andrew Lucio (Solvay), and Heath Stone (Chittenango) chipped in with 13, 12, and 10 points respectively. Stone was Onondaga’s top rebounder with 12 and Jake Johnson (Tully) added 9 rebounds. Prior and Lucio handed out 7 and 5 assists respectively.
Onondaga returns to Mid-State Athletic Conference play tomorrow (Thursday) evening at 7:00 pm, when they will host Corning Community College.
