Onondaga Community College Men’s Basketball player Jesse Gates named to NJCAA All-Region Team

Liverpool grad adds to previous conference honors.

SYRACUSE, NY. – February 21, 2011 – Onondaga Community College freshman men’s basketball player Jesse Gates (Liverpool) has been named to the 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association Region 3 Division III All-Region Team, as announced today. Gates was a 2nd Team selection. Onondaga is currently 20-9 overall, after falling, 77-70, to Broome Community College in the semi-finals of the Mid-State Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Gates led Onondaga with 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists in that contest. The Lazers have earned the #7 seed for the NJCAA Region 3 Division III Tournament, which will be held this weekend Jefferson Community College.

Gates has been the Lazers’ leading scorer this season. He is averaging 17.9 points per game overall, and currently ranks 4th among the Region 3 scoring leaders. He is also Onondaga’s second leading rebounder, averaging 7.4 rebounds per game, and is third on the team with 3.2 assists per contest. He is also shooting 73.8% from the free throw line this season, and has scored 518 points so far. Last week, Gates and teammate Heath Stone (Chittenango) were named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference All-Conference Team. Gates was named both the MSAC Player of the Week and the National Junior College Athletic Association National Player of the Week for the week ending January 23rd.

Onondaga will open play in the NJCAA Region 3 tournament on Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm, against #2 seed Finger Lakes Community College. The winner of that contest will face the winner of the 1:00 pm game between #3 Mohawk Valley Community College and #6 North Country Community College in a semi-final at 1:00 pm on Saturday. The regional championship game will take place on Sunday at 1:00 pm. All games will take place at Jefferson Community College in Watertown.
