SYRACUSE, NY. – February 23, 2012 – The Onondaga Community College men’s basketball team will make their 12th consecutive post-season appearance this Saturday when they face Jefferson Community College in the first semi-final of the Mid-State Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by MSAC regular season champion Cayuga Community College. The Lazers and Cannoneers will tip off at 2:00 pm at Cayuga. That game will be followed by the second semi-final between host Cayuga and Tompkins Cortland Community College, which will tip at approximately 4:00 pm. The All-Conference Team, Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year will be recognized in between the two semi-final contests.
Onondaga and Jefferson split two regular season meetings, with each winning on their own floor. The Cannoneers picked up a 95-94 win on January 19th, when Jefferson’s Jabriel Blue hit a baseline leaner with 2 seconds remaining. The Lazers then returned the favor by picking up an 87-82 win on February 11th behind 24 points from Ian Hamm (Liverpool).
Co-captains Jesse Gates (Liverpool) and Jordan Prior (Cortland) have led Onondaga to a 16-12 overall record on the season. Gates averages 14.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, while Prior is averaging 12.0 points and 5.4 assists per contest. Shooting guard Brandon Seibt (Central Square P.V. Moore) averages 13.6 points per game and is shooting 41.6% from the three-point arc and 85.7% from the foul line. Hamm is averaging 9.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and Kevin Corbin (Cicero-North Syracuse) averages 8.4 points per game and shoots a team best 55.8% from the floor. Ahmet Tunali (Syracuse Academy of Science) leads the Lazers in rebounding, pulling down 7.5 boards per contest.
Following the MSAC Tournament, the Lazers will compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 3 Division 3 Tournament next week. The regional tournament begins next Tuesday with first round games, and continues with the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals, March 2nd through 4th at Jefferson Community College. Seedings, pairings, and game times for the regional tournament will be released this Sunday evening.
