Basketball Coaches Association of New York recognizes Onondaga CC Men’s Basketball players Jesse Gates and Steve Lothridge

SYRACUSE, NY. – March 18, 2012 – The Basketball Coaches Association of New York has released its 2011-2012 men’s junior college awards. Onondaga Community College forward Jesse Gates (Liverpool) has been named to the BCANY All-New York State Junior College 2nd Team for the second consecutive year. The All-New York State Junior College Team recognizes the top junior college players from across New York State, regardless of Region or Division. Lazer forward Steve Lothridge (East Syracuse-Minoa) has been selected as a recipient of the BCANY Scholar Athlete Award, which recognizes accomplishment in the classroom as well as on the court.

Gates, one of Onondaga’s co-captains, led Onondaga in scoring for the second consecutive year, averaging 14.3 points per game. He scored 977 total points in his two-year career. He was also the team’s second leading rebounder, pulling down 6.9 boards per contest. His two top scoring games both came against NJCAA Region 3 champion SUNY Delhi, as Gates scored 30 points during the regular season game against the Broncos on November 19th, and 27 points in the tournament tilt. He also had 25 points, including 17 in under 2 minutes, in a win at Division II Jamestown Community College-Cattaraugus on November 12th. For the season, Gates topped the 20-point mark 8 times and reached double figures 22 times in 31 games. In addition to being recognized by the BCANY, Gates was recently named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference All-Conference Team and to the NJCAA Region 3 All-Region 2nd Team for the second consecutive year.

Lothridge averaged 1.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game in 28 games that he played. He also blocked 29 shots over the season. He posted 10 points and 6 rebounds in a win over Cayuga Community College on January 10th, and pulled down 9 rebounds in a win over Davis College on November 15th. Lothridge is a second year General Studies/Liberal Arts major with a 3.414 grade point average.
