SYRACUSE, NY. – October 31, 2012 – The Onondaga community college men’s basketball team will open its 2012-2013 season on the road this weekend. On Saturday, the Lazers open the season at Lehigh Carbon Community College in Schnecksville, PA, tipping off at 3:00 pm. The Lazers and Cougars will meet for only the second time in history, as Lehigh Carbon captured the only other meeting between the two schools, an 83-80 victory in the 2008 Onondaga Community College Classic. On Sunday, Onondaga will tip off at 2:00 pm at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA. The Lazers defeated the Spartans, 98-84, in last year’s season opener at Onondaga. Both Lehigh Carbon and Northampton are members of the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference.
Onondaga has also announced its 2012-2013 roster. The Lazers return 7 players from last year’s 17-14 squad which reached the Mid-State Athletic Conference championship game and the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 3 quarter-finals. Onondaga will be looking to extend its strings of 12 consecutive post-season berths this season. That mark is the longest active streak of any Mid-State Athletic Conference school.
Co-captains Malik Mountain (5’8” guard, Nedrow Onondaga, 1.3 points per game last year) and Garrett Sisson (Schenectady Mohonasen, 2.4 ppg) lead the group of returnees. Adam Misener (5’10” guard, Liverpool, 3.2 ppg), Jacob VanDusen (6’4” forward, Oneonta, 2.7 ppg), and Tyler Wood (Broadalbin-Perth, 3.3 ppg) also saw action for Onondaga a year ago, while Zachary Loura (6’1” guard, Fulton G. Ray Bodley) was a redshirt on last year’s team. Jonathan Foulds (6’3” guard, Norwich, 2.1 ppg) also played last season, and returns as a redshirt in anticipation of playing in 2013-2014.
Ten newcomers will complete this year’s roster. Seven of the newcomers, Dylan Amo (6’2” forward, Hermon-DeKalb), Tyler Bliss (6’2” forward, Liverpool), Vaughndell Brantley (6’1” forward, Cicero-North Syracuse), Michael Granato (5’10” guard, Auburn), David Haye (5’11” guard, Spring Valley Ramapo), Benjamin Honahan (5’10” guard, Malone Franklin Academy), and Michael Sugamosto (6’3” forward, East Syracuse Bishop Grimes / Alfred University) signed National Junior College Athletic Association Letters of Intent last spring. Three other first year players, Kyler Brown (6’3” forward, Weedsport), Robert Cooper (5’10” guard, Port Byron Dana L. West), and Ryan Gavin (6’3” forward, Nedrow Onondaga), round out the active roster. The New York State Sportswriters Association named Amo, Brantley, and Haye to their All-State High School Basketball Team a year ago.
Dave Pasiak (Clarkson University / Waterville) returns for his 13th year as Onondaga’s head coach, the longest tenure of any basketball coach at Onondaga. In his first 12 seasons, he has directed the Lazers to a 214-145 record, including an 105-53 mark in Mid-State Athletic Conference play. His 214 wins make him Onondaga’s all-time leader in coaching victories. Johnny Davis (SUNY Cortland / Syracuse), Mitchell Howe (SUNY Potsdam / Fayetteville), and John Meehan (Southern Connecticut State University / Baldwinsville) will serve as assistant coaches. Davis is entering his 11th season with the Lazers, while Howe is beginning his 1st year and Meehan returns to the staff after serving as an assistant from 2003 to 2006.
Following this weekend’s games in Pennsylvania, the Lazers return home next week. The home opener will be next Wednesday, November 7th, at 8:00 pm, when Onondaga hosts the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in the SRC Arena and Events Center.
