SYRACUSE, NY. – November 12, 2012 – Onondaga Community College men’s basketball player Vaughndell Brantley (Cicero-North Syracuse) was named National Junior College Athletic Association Region 3 Male Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 11th today. Brantley, a 6’1” swingman, shares weekly honors with basketball player Tyreek Jewell of Jamestown Community College. Brantley is also the first Onondaga athlete, male or female, to receive this recognition in the 2012-2013 academic year.
Brantley received the regional honor on the strength of his play in Onondaga’s two wins last week. Last Wednesday, in Onondaga’s 102-63 home opening win over SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Brantley scored 12 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and recorded 2 steals in only 17 minutes. On Saturday, the Lazers posted a 100-89 win over NJCAA Division II Jamestown Community College-Cattaraugus Campus. In that game, Brantley scored a career high 33 points, including 13 straight in a 19 point first half. He also grabbed 4 rebounds and recorded 2 assists and 2 steals in 31 minutes. On the week he averaged 22.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, made 14 of 28 shots from the field, including 6 of 12 from behind the three-point arc, and made 11 of 18 free throws.
The Lazers have a record of 3-1 thus far this season. Onondaga goes on the road for two games this week. On Tuesday, the Lazers travel to Johnson City for a 6:00 pm tip-off at Davis College, the 2-time defending Shenandoah & Chesapeake Conference champions. On Saturday, the Lazers will play SUNY Delhi, the #2 ranked team in the nation according to the most recent NJCAA Division III national poll. Tip-off is 4:00 pm in Delhi. Onondaga’s next home game is on Tuesday, November 20th, when the Lazers host Schenectady County Community College at 7:00 pm.
