SYRACUSE, NY. – December 9, 2012 – Anne Arundel Community College, the #9 team in the country in the most recent National Junior College Athletic Association national poll, used a 12-2 run late in the first half to take control and defeat host Onondaga Community College, 111-89, in the championship game of the 6th annual Onondaga Community College Classic on Sunday afternoon. It marks the first Classic title for the Pioneers, who were making their 5th appearance in the event. MassBay Community College captured the consolation game with a 99-67 win over Delaware County Community College. Anne Arundel and Onondaga had advanced to Sunday’s title tilt with semi-final wins on Saturday evening. The Lazers downed Delaware County, 94-85, while the Pioneers turned back MassBay, 68-66.
Anne Arundel’s Jalen Lester was named the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates James Aorilio and Tyler Washington, Tyler Bliss (Liverpool) of Onondaga, Boris Fodouop of MassBay and Tayqwayne Wallace of Delaware County. Anne Arundel is the 6th different Classic champion in the 6-year history of the event, which has become one of the top in-season NJCAA Division III tournaments in the nation.
The Lazers are now off for final exams and the Christmas holidays. Onondaga returns to action on Saturday, January 5th, when they host Columbia-Greene Community College in a non-conference contest.
