SYRACUSE, NY. – January 7, 2013 – Onondaga Community College men’s basketball player Vaughndell Brantley (Cicero-North Syracuse) was named National Junior College Athletic Association Region 3 Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 6th today. This is the second time this season that Brantley, a 6’1” swingman, has received the regional honor, which recognizes the top performance of the past week across all sports and all divisions. Previously he shared weekly honors with basketball player Tyreek Jewell of Jamestown Community College for the week ending November 11th. Brantley is also the only Onondaga athlete, male or female, to receive this recognition in the 2012-2013 academic year.
Brantley received the regional honor on the strength of his play in Onondaga’s victory over Columbia-Greene Community College on Saturday afternoon. He scored a game high 27 points in the Lazers’ 90-73 win, connecting on 9 of 14 shots from the floor, including 6 of 10 from behind the three-point arc. He also added 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist in 28 minutes of action. For the season, Brantley is averaging 14.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game. He is shooting 47.6% from the floor, 38.8% from the three-point arc, and 67.6% from the foul line.
Onondaga, 8-5 on the season, returns to action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Auburn to play Cayuga Community College. Cayuga is the defending Mid-State Athletic Conference Champion, and the game will be the conference opener for both schools and a rematch of last season’s MSAC Championship Game. Tip-off is 7:30 pm. The Lazers’ next home game is a 3 pm MSAC tip-off next Saturday against Corning Community College.
