OCC 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament Official Rules

The following are the official rules governing Intramural Basketball at Onondaga Community College, and are based on the Official NABA (National Amateur Basketball Association) Rule Book.

THE TEAM

There will be a maximum of 12 teams in the tournament.  Teams will be made up of 3-4 players. Three (3) players will compete for each team; others will be available as substitutes. Substitutions may be made after a basket, a foul shot or during any stoppage of play.

THE COURT

The game will be played on one half of a regulation sized basketball court.

THE EQUIPMENT

All games will be played using a full size (men‘s) basketball. External basketballs will not be allowed for use.

We ask that all participants arrive with proper attire and shirts will need to be left on throughout the entire tournament.

THE GAME

Each team will play at least three (3) games.  Teams will shoot to decide which team gets possession first.  The games will be played by alternating possessions after a basket is made, not “make it, take it.”

  • Out of Bounds: If the ball is knocked out of bounds or goes across the mid court line it shall be awarded to the opposing team (the team that did not knock it out).
  • Jump Balls: Alternating possession on all jump balls will be in effect. The first alternating possession will be given to the team that did not start the game with the ball.
  • Tie Breaker: If at the end of the 15 minutes there is a tie game, the two teams will continue playing.  Each team will have one possession, if both teams score they will continue alternating possessions until a team does not score.

CHECK LINE

  1. The three point line will constitute as the ‘check line.’
  2. To start each half or after a foul is awarded, a player must pass the ball into play from behind the check line.
  3. On defensive rebounds or steals, the ball must be returned to the check line and the player in possession of the ball may maintain control and attempt to score.

SCORING

  1. Each basket is worth one (1) point.
  2. Each three point shot is worth two (2) points.

FOULS

Individual players are responsible for calling their own fouls (a teammate cannot call a foul for another).

  1. If a player calls a foul on a shot and the basket goes in that team gets the point and the ball will be given to the opposing team.
  2. If the shooter who gets fouled misses the shot they will keep possession.
  3. Basketball etiquette asks for foul calls to be made immediately and communicated loud and clearly.
  4. Players who excessively foul will be warned and possibly ejected.

TIMING AND WINNING A GAME/MATCH

The games will consist of 15 minutes of play or whichever team reaches 15 points first will be the winner.

PLAYOFFS

For a 12 team tournament, 8 will make the playoffs. For an 8 team tournament all 8 will make the playoffs. It will be a single elimination playoff situation and the bracket seeds are based on your record in the first three (3) games. Tie breakers will go to points against.

RULE ENFORCEMENT

Rules will be enforced primarily by the "honor system". Players will be expected to rule whether or not a hit was legal or whether they were legally eliminated. All contests will be supervised by a court monitor. The court monitor’s responsibility will be to rule on any situation in which teams cannot agree. THE COURT MONITOR’S DECISION IS FINAL – NO EXCEPTIONS.
