Onondaga Community College to play at Jefferson CC in Regional first round contest

SYRACUSE, NY. -- February 26, 2006 -- The Onondaga Community College men’s basketball team has been seeded #11 for the upcoming National Junior College Athletic Association Region III Division III Championship Tournament. The Lazers, with a record of 17-11, will play at #6 Jefferson Community College in a first round game on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm. The winner of the Onondaga-Jefferson contest will then face #3 Finger Lakes Community College in a regional quarterfinal contest on Friday at 6:00 pm at Mohawk Valley Community College. The regional semi finals will be held at 1:00 and 3:00 pm on Saturday, also at Mohawk Valley, with the regional championship game at 1:00 pm next Sunday. The winner of the Region III tournament advances to the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, to be held March 16-18 at SUNY Delhi. This season is the 5th consecutive year that Onondaga has qualified for regional play. No other Mid-State Athletic Conference school, and only Hudson Valley Community College and Mohawk Valley Community College among all region members, can make that claim.

Also today, Onondaga men’s basketball player Kenny Gethers (Syracuse Bishop Grimes) was named to the Region III Division III All-Region 3rd Team, as voted on by the region’s coaches. Gethers, a 6’3” forward, leads the Lazers in scoring, rebounding, and steals. On the season, he is averaging 18.1 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.2 steals per game. Earlier, he was also named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference All-Conference Team.
