SYRACUSE, NY. - December 7, 2006 - The Onondaga Community College men's basketball team defeated Mohawk Valley Community College, 73-66, at Mohawk Valley on Tuesday evening. Mohawk Valley entered the game ranked #10 in the most recent National Junior College Athletic Association Division III national poll, and entered the game undefeated at home on the season. The win was Onondaga's fourth in a row, and raised the Lazers' overall record to 6-3 with two contests remaining before breaking for final exams and the Christmas holiday.
The Lazers and Hawks had a very tightly contested first half, with Mohawk Valley heading to the locker room with a 31-30 advantage. A Chris Vincent (Baldwinsville C.W. Baker) steal and layup to open the second half gave Onondaga a 32-31 lead, and the Lazers never trailed throughout the remainder of the second half. A late 15-5 run gave the Lazers a 65-50 lead with just under 2 minutes remaining, before a Mohawk Valley fury in the final minute closed the gap somewhat. Danny Smith (Canastota) led the Lazers with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Vincent added 15 points, and Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) pulled down 10 rebounds. Point guard Zack Thomsen (New Berlin Unadilla Valley) had a team best 6 assists and did not commit a turnover. The Lazers held a 47-43 rebounding advantage, and held Mohawk Valley to 37% (23 of 62) shooting from the floor, while connecting on 42% (29 of 69) shots themselves.
Onondaga returns to action this Sunday, December 10, when they host North Country Community College at 1:00 pm. North Country will be the second consecutive nationally ranked opponent for the Lazers, as they will enter the contest #8 in the country. It will also be the 4th time in the first 10 games that Onondaga will face a ranked foe. Following that game, the Lazers will head into the semester break with an 8:00 pm home game against Columbia Greene Community College next Tuesday, December 12.
