SYRACUSE, NY. – January 7, 2007 – The Onondaga Community College men’s basketball team opened Mid-State Athletic Conference play with a 104-76 home win over Jefferson Community College yesterday afternoon. The 104 point total marked Onondaga’s highest scoring output of the season thus far. The Lazers won for the 6th time in their last 7 games, but were also playing for the first time since December 12. Onondaga now has an overall record of 8-4.
After Jefferson scored the game’s opening basket, Onondaga went on a 10-2 run and never looked back. The Lazers opened up a 47-28 halftime advantage and extended the lead to as much as 35 in the second half. Onondaga had a very balanced attack, as 5 players reached double figures and 14 of the 17 players who played in the game scored. Rich Buckmon (Syracuse Henninger) led the Lazers with 17 points, while Steve Siechen (East Syracuse-Minoa) added 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Pat Crowley (Union Springs) scored 14 points and handed out 5 assists and Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) had a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Vincent (Baldwinsville C.W. Baker) also reached double figures with 10 points and added 3 assists. Danny Smith (Canastota) and Zack Thomsen (New Berlin Unadilla Valley) each recorded 7 assists and Smith grabbed 5 rebounds. The Lazers made 43 of 80 shots (53%), while limiting Jefferson to 30 of 74 (40%) from the floor and forcing 25 Cannoneer turnovers.
Onondaga’s next game will be a non-conference matchup at Hudson Valley Community College at 7:00 pm on Wednesday. The Lazers then travel to defending Mid-State Conference champion Finger Lakes Community College next Saturday at 3:00 pm. The next home game will be on Monday, January 15, as the Lazers host Tompkins-Cortland Community College in a 3:00 pm Martin Luther King Day game.
