Onondaga Community College holds on for win over neighboring Cayuga Community College

Lazers remain unbeaten in Mid-State Conference play

SYRACUSE, NY. - January 21, 2007 - The Onondaga Community College men's basketball team hosted neighboring Cayuga Community College yesterday, and held on for a 92-89 win. The Lazers trailed the Spartans by 5 at halftime, but gained the lead early in the second half and extended it to as much as 13 with 4:48 remaining. A 12-0 Cayuga run got the Spartans back in it, however, before Onondaga went on a 6-point run of their own to move the spread back to 7. Danny Smith (Canastota), Justin Stern (Jamesville-DeWitt) and Steve Siechen (East Syracuse-Minoa) all converted 2 free throws in the final minute, and a desperation Cayuga three-point attempt was off the mark, allowing the Lazers to hold on. With the win Onondaga raises its overall record to 11-4, and its Mid-State Athletic Conference mark to 3-0. The Lazers have now won 5 straight games, and 9 of their last 10.

Smith and Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) both posted career highs to lead Onondaga. Smith scored 28 points on 8 of 9 shooting, and added a team high 8 assists. Williams tallied 19 points, making 6 of 7 shots, and blocked a team best 4 shots. Smith and Williams tied for the team high in rebounds with 9 apiece. Siechen and Rich Buckmon (Syracuse Henninger) also hit double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively. The game was the 4th straight that at least 4 Lazers scored in double figures. Onondaga connected on 29 of 63 shots from the floor (46%), while Cayuga made 35 of 81 attempts (43%). The Lazers held a 43-42 rebounding advantage, and made 30 of 39 free throw attempts, while Cayuga hit on 9 of 11 from the line.

Onondaga returns to action tomorrow (Monday), hosting Finger Lakes Community College in a Mid-State Conference contest. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm.
