SYRACUSE, NY. - January 23, 2007 - Onondaga Community College men's basketball player Danny Smith (Canastota) has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association Region III Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 21. Smith received the honor, which recognizes the top performance among all male athletes in all sports and divisions within Region III, on the strength of his performance in Onondaga's 92-89 win over Cayuga Community College on Saturday. In that contest, Smith led the Lazers with a career best high 28 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, handed out 8 assists and blocked 3 shots. He made 8 of his 9 shots from the floor, including both of his three-point attempts. He also connected on 10 of his 12 free throws.
Last night, Onondaga dropped a 102-86 decision to Finger Lakes Community College. The Lazers fell behind 14-0 against the visiting Lakers and were never able to get closer than within 9 points the rest of the way. Smith led Onondaga with 18 points, while Justin Stern (Jamesville-DeWitt) added 14. Rich Buckmon (Syracuse Henninger) and Steve Siechen (East Syracuse Minoa) recorded 12 and 10 points respectively. Siechen and Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) each pulled down 9 rebounds. Onondaga was victimized by poor shooting, connecting on only 27 of 84 attempts (32%), while Finger Lakes made 42 of 74 shots (57%). Finger Lakes held a 50-47 rebounding advantage, allowing them to overcome 29 turnovers. The loss was Onondaga's first in Mid-State Athletic Conference play, and ended the Lazers' five game winning streak. Onondaga is now 11-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Onondaga returns to action tomorrow (Wednesday), hosting Corning Community College in a Mid-State Conference contest. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm.
