SYRACUSE, NY. – February 1, 2007 – The Onondaga Community College men’s basketball team defeated Jefferson Community College, 98-91, in overtime last night at Jefferson. The win moves Onondaga’s overall record to 14-5, and their Mid-State Athletic Conference mark to 6-1. The Lazers remain in second place in the Mid-State Conference, 1/2 game behind conference leader Broome Community College. Onondaga has now won three in a row, and 12 of its last 14 games.
The game was tightly contested throughout, as neither team enjoyed a lead of greater than 9 points at any point in the contest. Onondaga lost an opportunity to win the game in regulation when they missed 5 of 6 free throws, allowing Jefferson to score on a rebound basket which was allowed by the game officials, despite the fact that videotape shows that the shot was released after the horn had sounded. Rich Buckmon (Syracuse Henninger) scored the first 6 points of overtime, and the Lazers were never headed. Justin Stern (Jamesville-DeWitt) led Onondaga with a career high 27 points on 9 three-point field goals. Stern tied the school record for most made three-pointers in a game. That record is held by Chet Columbus (Syracuse Bishop Ludden), who also made 9 three-pointers against North Country Community College on January 14, 2001. Buckmon tallied 23 points, while Danny Smith (Canastota) and Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) also hit double figures with 20 and 10 points respectively. Williams added 18 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocked shots, while Smith led the Lazers with 8 assists.
The Lazers return to action this weekend with a pair of non-conference road games. The Lazers travel to North Country Community College Saturday for a 3:00 pm contest, then tip off at Clinton Community College at 1:00 pm on Sunday.
