SYRACUSE, NY. - February 6, 2007 - Onondaga Community College men's basketball player Justin Stern (Jamesville-DeWitt) has been named the Mid-State Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending February 4. Stern earned the honor based on his performance in Onondaga's only conference game last week, a 98-91 overtime win at Jefferson Community College last Wednesday. In that game, he scored a career high 27 points by connecting on 9 of his 13 three-point attempts. His 9 made three-point goals also tied an Onondaga school record, originally set by Chet Columbus (Syracuse Bishop Ludden) in a game against North Country Community College on January 14, 2001. On the season Stern has connected on 40 of 96 three-point attempts, and his three-point percentage of 41.7% currently ranks him 8th nationally, according to the latest National Junior College Athletic Association statistics.
Onondaga split a pair of road contests over the past weekend. On Saturday, the Lazers avenged a buzzer-beating loss last December by defeating North Country Community College, 85-71. Danny Smith (Canastota) and Rich Buckmon (Syracuse Henninger) led the way with 19 points apiece, while Stern added 16. Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) pulled down 13 rebounds and Buckmon added 10 boards. Williams and Smith each handed out 7 assists.
On Sunday, the Lazers fell to Clinton Community College, 71-69. Onondaga trailed throughout most of the contest, before a Stern three-pointer gave them a 69-68 lead with 2:00 remaining. The Lazers would be unable to score again, however, and Clinton was able to regain the lead and hold on when a three-pointer and a tip-in follow on the final possession both missed the mark. Smith recorded a double-double with 24 points and 11 assists. Stern and Buckmon added 14 points each, while Buckmon and Williams tied for the rebounding lead with 9 each.
The Lazers return to Mid-State Athletic Conference play tomorrow (Wednesday) with an 8:00 pm contest at Tompkins Cortland Community College.
