Onondaga Community College completes season sweep of neighboring rival Cayuga CC

Former Spartan Buckmon leads Lazers with career high 34 points.

SYRACUSE, NY. - February 11, 2007 - The Onondaga Community College men's basketball team defeated Cayuga Community College, 110-98, at Cayuga yesterday afternoon. The win was the Lazers' second over the neighboring Spartans this season, and marks the first time since 2002 that Onondaga has swept the season series. The two Mid-State Athletic Conference rivals have split their two regular season contests in each of the last four seasons. Onondaga has now moved its Mid-State Conference record to 8-1, and its overall mark to 17-6.

Cayuga led yesterday's contest for much of the first half, before a late Onondaga run gave the Lazers a 39-33 halftime advantage. Onondaga extended its advantage to as much as 20 points in the second half, scoring 71 points in the process. Rich Buckmon (Syracuse Henninger) led the Lazers with a career high 34 points. Buckmon, who was an All-Conference performer at Cayuga last season, connected on 13 of 22 shots, grabbed 9 rebounds, and handed out 4 assists. Steve Siechen (East Syracuse-Minoa) added 26 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Chris Vincent (Baldwinsville C.W. Baker) also reached double figures with 18 points. Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) tied for the team lead in rebounds with 9 and handed out 6 assists, while Tyler Kurzinski (Central Square P.V. Moore) recorded a team best 7 assists with 0 turnovers. For the game, Onondaga made 41 of 73 shots (56%), while Cayuga connected on 38 of 69 attempts (55%). Onondaga owned a commanding 51-28 rebounding advantage and forced 21 Cayuga turnovers.

The Lazers return to Mid-State Athletic Conference play tomorrow (Monday) with a 7:00 pm home contest against Tompkins Cortland Community College. The game is a rescheduled contest which was originally slated to be played on January 15, but postponed due to inclement weather.
