SYRACUSE, NY. - February 13, 2007 - The Onondaga Community College men's basketball team defeated Tompkins Cortland Community College, 93-84, at home last night. With the win the Lazers clinched a spot in the Mid-State Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, to be held February 24th and 25th at the home court of the conference regular season champion. Currently Onondaga and Broome Community College are tied for the top spot with identical 9-1 conference records. The Lazers now hold an overall record of 18-6.
Onondaga started fast against Tompkins Cortland, opening up a 44-26 halftime advantage. After the two teams traded three pointers to start the second half, Tompkins Cortland went on a 42-16 run over the next 10 minutes to turn an 18 point deficit into an 8 point advantage. Onondaga then went on a 13-3 spurt of its own to recapture the lead, part of a game ending 32-13 run. The Lazers placed five players in double figures, led by Rich Buckmon (Syracuse Henninger), who recorded 20 points and a team best 8 rebounds. Steve Siechen (East Syracuse-Minoa) was next with 19 points, followed by Justin Stern (Jamesville-DeWitt) with 16. Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) and Danny Smith (Canastota) also hit double figures with 15 and 13 points respectively. Tyler Kurzinski (Central Square P.V. Moore) handed out a team best 7 assists. Onondaga enjoyed a huge advantage at the foul line, making 29 of 35 free throws as compared to 4 of 7 for the Panthers. That allowed the Lazers to overcome 12 three-point goals by the guests. Onondaga also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Tompkins Cortland, 45-34.
The Lazers return to Mid-State Athletic Conference play tonight (Tuesday) with a 7:00 pm game at SUNY Canton. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday night, but was moved up one day in an effort to avoid the winter storm expected to hit all of upstate New York late Tuesday night and all day on Wednesday.
