SYRACUSE, NY. - February 23, 2007 -Onondaga Community College will host the Mid-State Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship Tournament this weekend. Onondaga earned the tournament's top seed and the right to host based on capturing the regular season conference championship. The Lazers, 21-7 overall and 12-2 in conference play, will host #4 seed Corning Community College, 16-9 overall and 9-4 in conference, in the tournament semi-finals Saturday evening at 8:00 pm. #2 seed Finger Lakes Community College, 20-8 overall and 11-3 in conference, will play #3 Broome Community College, 17-9 overall and 11-3 in conference, in the other semi-final at 6:00 pm. The two semi-final winners will then play for the conference championship Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
The Lazers will play Corning just three days after closing out the regular season against the Red Barons in Corning. In that contest, Onondaga rallied from an early 10 point deficit to go up by 11 midway through the second half, only to see Corning stage a rally of their own and come away with a 95-90 victory. Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) led Onondaga with 18 points and 11 rebounds. In the process, Williams set a new single season rebounding mark, having now grabbed 268 boards on the season. He eclipses two-time All-American Joe Olsen's (Central Square P.V. Moore) total of 265 in 2003-04. Four other Lazers also reached double figures against Corning, including Rich Buckmon (Syracuse Henninger) and Justin Stern (Jamesville-DeWitt), who totaled 17 points each. Steve Siechen (East Syracuse-Minoa) and Danny Smith (Canastota) tallied 12 and 10 points respectively, with Smith handing out 9 assists. The difference in the game proved to be Onondaga's 29 turnovers, compared to only 13 for the hosts.
Following the conference championships this weekend, Onondaga awaits their seeding for the NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament, which begins next week. Seeds will be announced Sunday night. First round games will be played at the home courts of the higher seeded teams next Tuesday, February 27th, with the remainder of the tournament to be held at Herkimer County Community College March 2-4.
