SYRACUSE, NY. – October 23, 2007 – Onondaga Community College has announced its 2007-2008 Men’s Basketball roster. The Lazers return 13 players from last year’s 23-8 squad, which captured the school’s first Mid-State Athletic Conference championship in 15 years. Co-captains Zack Thomsen (6’2” guard, Unadilla Valley) and Kevin Barrett (6’2” swingman, Syracuse Bishop Ludden) lead Onondaga this season. Thomsen was Onondaga’s starting point guard for the first 15 games last season, before he suffered a season ending knee injury. He averaged 6.5 points and 6.1 assists per contest and ranked 17th nationally in assists. Barrett returns to Onondaga this year after a two-year absence. During the 2004-05 season he was the Lazers’ second leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 12.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest.
Onondaga returns 12 other players from a year ago, including Shane Williams (6’5” forward, Camillus West Genesee), an Honorable Mention All-Mid-State Athletic conference selection. Williams averaged 9.8 points and a team best 9.7 rebounds per contest. Also returning are Mitch Beaver (5’10” guard, Cicero-North Syracuse, 1.7 points per game), Ryan Chapman (6’3” forward, Syracuse Bishop Ludden, 3.0 ppg), Pat Crowley (6’5” forward, Union Springs, 3.2 ppg), Ben Johnson (6’2” forward, Sherburne-Earlville, 1.0 ppg), Brett Liedka (6’7” center, Syracuse Bishop Grimes, 2.5 ppg), Cameron Manley (6’ Swingman, Fort Plain, 0.4 ppg), Luke Schrader (6’2” guard, Herkimer, 1.6 ppg), and Chris Vincent (6’3” guard, Baldwinsville C.W. Baker, 7.0 ppg). Pete Byrne (6’ guard, Syracuse Bishop Ludden), a redshirt who joined the team after transferring from St. John Fisher College last January will see his first collegiate action as well. Two other players who saw action a year ago, Josh Kennedy (5’11” guard, Chittenango, 0.7 ppg) and Tim Scholz (6’ guard, Camillus West Genesee, 1.2 ppg) will redshirt this season in anticipation of playing in 2008-09.
7 newcomers round out this year’s roster. They include freshmen Jordan Barzee (6’3” guard, Home School), James Burns (6’6” center, Herkimer), Brandon Haughton (6’1” forward, Cicero-North Syracuse), Jason Kondra (5’11” guard, East Syracuse-Minoa), and Matt Potter (6’6” forward, Unadilla Valley), as well as transfer Dan Shelly (6’2” swingman, Camillus West Genesee / University of Buffalo). Also, Eldar Kadic (6’ swingman, Liverpool) will be a redshirt member of this year’s team.
Dave Pasiak (Waterville) returns for his 8th year as Onondaga’s head coach. In his first 7 seasons, he has directed the Lazers to a 131-81 record, including a 67-31 mark in Mid-State Athletic Conference play. Onondaga is one of only three schools to have qualified for the NJCAA Region III tournament in each of the past six seasons. Johnny Davis (Syracuse) and Scott Blair (Syracuse) return as assistant coaches. Davis is entering his 6th season with the Lazers, while Blair is beginning his 2nd year.
Onondaga will open its season on Friday, November 2, at NJCAA Division II Jamestown-Cattaraugus County Community College. The home opener will be on Thursday, November 15, when the Lazers host SUNY Delhi.
