SYRACUSE, NY. – November 4, 2007 – The Onondaga Community College men’s basketball team opened the 2007-08 season with a convincing 114-70 win over Jamestown Community College-Cattaraugus County in Olean on Friday night. The Lazers attacked Jamestown’s press early in jumping out to an 18-0 advantage, and were never threatened in the contest. Onondaga held a 66-27 lead at the half, and extended it to as much as 54 points in the second half. The win was Onondaga’s 7th straight against the NJCAA Division II (scholarship-granting) Jaguars.
Shane Williams (Camillus West Genesee) led a balanced Onondaga attack with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists. He was joined in double figures by Ryan Chapman (Syracuse Bishop Ludden) with a career high 18 points, Kevin Barrett (Syracuse Bishop Ludden) with 16, Chris Vincent (Baldwinsville C.W. Baker) with 13, and Luke Schrader (Herkimer) with 11. Zack Thomsen (Unadilla Valley) handed out 8 assists, while Chapman recorded 3 steals and Mitch Beaver (Cicero-North Syracuse) added 8 rebounds. Onondaga connected on 48 of 90 shots (53%), while limiting Jamestown to 22 of 82 (26%). The Lazers owned a commanding 72-46 rebounding advantage.
Onondaga returns to action next Friday, November 9, against Queensborough Community College, in the opening round of the Anthony Torchia Memorial Classic at Mohawk Valley Community College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm. The Onondaga-Queensborough winner will face the winner of Friday’s second contest between host Mohawk Valley and Word of Life Bible Institute in the tournament championship game on Saturday at 2:00 pm. Friday’s two losing teams will meet in a 12:00 noon consolation game on Saturday.
