Through a comprehensive course of study, you’ll combine academic background and field experience to best prepare you for the realities and challenges of the job. Human biology, intercultural communication, chemical dependencies and family systems are just some of the topics you’ll explore on your way to providing the highest quality of treatment and counseling possible.

Our program provides students with the 350 hours of education and training required by the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) to receive a credential as an alcoholism and substance abuse counselor. Through our program, you’ll learn problem-solving, critical thinking and listening skills that help set you apart from the pack. Students can also continue their education and transfer to a four-year school upon completion of the program at Onondaga.
Course Descriptions >
Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a certificate, provided by OASAS, to attach to their Credential Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor application. Students will then be sent their certification as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor – Trainee (CASAC-T). Students receiving this certification as a CASAC-T can work at alcohol and substance abuse agencies throughout New York State
Median salaries for substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors are nearly $40,000 a year according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Additionally, positions in the field are expected to rise much faster than average within the next 10 years.
