    Biography

    Professor Van Arsdale is writing a book due out in the Spring of 2013 titled, “The Poverty of Work: The Triumph of Temporary Work in Post-Industrial America.” It will examine what happens when jobs change from permanent to temporary and its ripple effect on society. As part of the research for his book Van Arsdale spent summers working temporary jobs so he could better understand the plight of workers.
    Professor Van Arsdale holds a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, a Master of Arts in Sociology from St. John’s University in Queens, New York, and a PhD in Social Science from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. Honors include the Carlson-Mathews Community Service Award from Eckerd College and having graduated with Distinction from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

    Professor Van Arsdale has been teaching since 1999. He’s taught at Syracuse University and Cornell University and has held appointments at SUNY Tompkins Cortland Community College, Hartwick College, and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where he served as a Distinguished Lecturer
