According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, employment in the hospitality industry is expected to increase by nearly 18 percent over the next seven years. Jillann Neely, associate professor and chair of the Food Services Administration and Restaurant Management program at Onondaga, says jobs in the hospitality industry in Central New York are keeping pace with national trends. Specifically in the Finger Lakes area. “The concept of ‘boutique’ inns and hotels is very popular now as people are increasingly drawn to hotels and bed and breakfasts that are smaller in size, but still offer personal service and full amenities.”
One of the proposals under consideration for the 14 acres of land recently purchased by the College is to convert an existing building into the Inn at Onondaga, a bed and breakfast-type facility that would be run entirely by students in the hospitality degree programs. “The Inn at Onondaga is a relatively new concept among colleges in our region,” says Neely. “Virtually nowhere else can students learn about front desk management, hotel procedures, culinary operations and sales, all while perfecting the art of customer service in a learning/working classroom.”
