Onondaga Community College has named John Zacharek Vice President for Development and Executive Director of the OCC Foundation. In this role, Zacharek will lead Onondaga’s growing development efforts and further enhance the professional, community, and alumni relationships of the College.
“I’m pleased to welcome John to Onondaga Community College,” said Onondaga Community College President Debbie L. Sydow, Ph.D. “As we complete the $7.5 million Reach Beyond Capital Campaign, I’m confident that his impressive experience in fundraising and development will lead Onondaga into a new era of excellence in support of students and the community that we serve.”
Zacharek joins the College with more than 20 years of development, marketing and public relations experience. Most recently, he served as the vice president for external affairs at Upstate University Hospital at Community General and executive director for the Community General Foundation. Under Zacharek’s leadership, the foundation doubled its total philanthropic support in three years.
Prior to his position at Upstate University Hospital at Community General, Zacharek served as the assistant dean for advancement at Syracuse University’s College of Human Services and Health Professions. In this role, he directed the college’s development, alumni relations, and communications efforts, while leading all efforts to secure a record $7 million in new major gift support. Additionally, he served Upstate Medical University Foundation for a decade, most recently as director of corporate development and endowment campaigns. During this time, he was instrumental in establishing and completing the academic medical center's first capital campaign – an effort that raised $21.5 million in less than three years. Zacharek also functioned as the marketing and public relations manager at Oswego Hospital before his appointment to Upstate.
“It is truly an honor to join such a respected and progressive academic institution,” said Zacharek. “Onondaga Community College has deep roots within our community, and its impressive growth over the last decade is truly a credit to the College’s leadership and to donors who have demonstrated their commitment to our students and the Central New York community. I’m very proud to be a part of this vibrant campus.”
A graduate of Binghamton University’s School of Management, Zacharek serves as vice president on the board of directors of the Central New York Association of Fundraising Professionals. He was named a 2006 recipient of the Greater Syracuse 40 Under 40 award and was a member of Upstate Medical University’s 2005 Team of the Year Award and Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Award in 2003.
Zacharek resides in Baldwinsville with his wife, Jennifer.
