When Jaedin Feimster was attending high school in New York City, he wasn't considering continuing his education. "I was working at Wendy's and just thinking about saving money." That changed when his mother told him she had a dream about him going to college. Feimster searched schools online, found Onondaga Community College, and decided to attend.

The first time he saw OCC or the Syracuse area was the day he moved into the residence hall in August 2022. "I went to the State Fair with my roommate and he brought me to his home in Auburn." His roommate's kindness created a bond and helped him feel welcome.

While exercising at the YMCA on campus, he struck up a conversation with a fellow student, Noah Rivers. They became friends, and Rivers helped Feimster get involved with groups on campus including the Extraordinary Men of Distinction, the Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging Council, and the Unity Day Committee which are all headquartered in the Meg O'Connell Center. "I went to the office one day and never left. I really liked the comradery, the brotherhood, and the mentorship."

Feimster also became a leader within the Residence Hall Study Program. Every Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Feimster hosts a study session in Residence Hall B for anyone who wants to attend. "We do our work first, then we talk."

With each passing semester, Feimster has become a better student. His grade point average has improved from sub 2.0 to 2.8 to 3.1. His goal this semester is a perfect 4.0. "That's my dream. I wasn't always the best in high school. I think being away from the city where it's loud helps me focus more. I learned how to manage my time. I matured a lot."

Feimster will complete his Humanities & Social Sciences degree in May. He plans to transfer to a four-year school. "I'm a big advocate for psychology. If I could get a bachelor's in Psychology, that would be a nice start."
