Emergency Evacuation Procedures for People with Disabilities

If you need evacuation assistance when a fire alarm goes off, take the following steps:

  1. Do NOT use the elevator.
  2. If you’re in a class or college office, alert the faculty or staff member that s/he needs to tell Campus Safety and Security Officer your name, location, and type of disability.  If you’re not in a class or office, find the nearest employee (faculty or staff) and tell him/her that same information.
  3. You should NOT stay in the classroom or office UNLESS there is fire or smoke in the hallway and the room has no smoke or fire.  If it is safe to stay in your current location and you are unable to safely exit the building yourself then you should shelter in place.  Campus Safety and/or responding local emergency personnel will conduct a “room to room” search to ensure that everyone has evacuated the building.
  4. Let the crowd get past you.  Then proceed to the nearest stairwell that appears to be safe.  Do NOT enter the stairwell, just stay to the side of the stairwell door.
  5. The faculty or staff member will tell a Campus Safety and Security Officer (stationed outside of the building) your name, where you are, and what your disability is.  Campus Safety and Security will take the appropriate actions to assist in your evacuation.
  6. If you cannot notify anyone on your floor that you need help, most floors have an intercom box at designated locations (see attached Egress Route maps for these locations).  Speak as clearly as possible, indicating your type of disability, and your name.  Or, if you have a cell phone, call 498-2311 (Campus Safety and Security emergency #).  Failing any other available method, listen for rescue personnel who will be searching the building and be prepared to make noise to help responders find your location.
  7. Those trained to evacuate individuals in need of special assistance will ensure your safe exit.

NOTE:  In the case of a drill, individuals with mobility impairments will NOT be fully evacuated.  You should proceed to the nearest stairwell.  Someone from the rescue team will locate you and inform you as to what would happen in an actual emergency.

We encourage you to take time now to find the number assigned to STAIRWELLS near each of your classrooms.  Feel free to communicate this with your instructors in advance of any drill to confirm that they too have this information. Also-- locate the red intercom box on each floor where you are spending your time while on campus.  By taking these actions, you are taking important steps to ensure your safety.

The campus also now has 58 outdoor Emergency Call Boxes (“blue lights”) that you can use to convey any needs when you are outside of a building. You can use these to contact Campus Safety & Security for assistance or information.

Should you have any question regarding the above, contact Campus Safety and Security (315-498-2478).
